Adoption Policies,
Procedures, and Applications
The Connecticut Parrot Society (CPS) helps residents of
Connecticut with the placement of companion birds.
If you need to place your bird, we request that your bird remain with
you while we list the bird for adoption
on this Web site and in our newsletter.
To review our Adoption Policies,
Procedures, and Application
Fee Schedule click here.
To place your bird for
adoption through CPS, please complete the Relinquishment Form
and mail it to CPS. A CPS adoption committee member will contact you
upon its receipt.
We are not a parrot rescue or sanctuary, thus
we cannot accept emergency placement on a regular basis.
Our foster care housing is limited and, if we do not have available
foster homes,
we may need to refer emergency placement to other clubs or rescues in
the surrounding area.
We are in great need of foster homes for some of the birds that we are
receiving into the adoption program.
If you are a CPS member and can help provide foster care,
please
review
the Foster
Care
Polices
and
Procedures and complete the Foster
Care
Application
and mail it to CPS.
To apply for adoption of a
bird through CPS, please complete the Adoption
Application
and mail it, along with a non-refundable
application
fee
of
$25.00
for
CPS
Members
and
$35.00
for
non-members
to CPS.
Adoption applications will remain on file with CPS for up to six (6)
months,
or until a bird is adopted, whichever comes first.
Please note that non-members may adopt after a bird
has been in the program for thirty (30) days.
You must be at least 21 years old in
order to be eligible to adopt through CPS.
Questions about the CPS adoption program or
any form(s) listed above should be directed to

Charlie and Charlemagne
4/6/2010
|
4/6/2010
Cockatiels, Charlie and
Charlemagne, are thought to be males but have not been sexed. They
are between 1 - 1 1/2 yrs old. They must be adopted together. Charlie
is very friendly, and will step up to come out of the cage. Charlemagne
is more cautious and is not hand tame, although he will follow Charlie
out of the cage. With continued work these birds will make good
companion birds. Both birds have been converted to Zupreme Natural
Maintenance pelleted diet with Goldenfeast Australian Blend as a snack.
These birds are presently in foster care.

Buster - 6/14/2011
|
6/14/2011
Buster
is a
26-year-old, imported
Blue-fronted Amazon. She has been in her current home for 13
years and was previously in a home for 13 years. She has been DNA-sexed
and very well cared for and loved. Buster is one of five birds in a
bird room; at night, blackout curtains are closed, and the flock
doesn’t make noise until the family pulls the curtains to let in the
sun. This is usually around 10 am. Buster’s diet primarily consists of
ZuPreem fruit-blend pellets, Nutri-berries, and a small amount of seed.
According to her current owner, Buster plucks during the winter. Her
down feathers are coming in now, and there is no pink skin showing.
The rest of her is
beautiful.
During the home visit,
Buster talked, stepped up for the owner, and readily stepped onto my
hand from the owner’s hand. She stayed there for quite a while, but her
body language indicated that she wanted to go back inside her cage. The
door was kept open, and she showed curiosity as to what was going on.
When I approached the cage a second time, she was a little shy with me,
but didn’t show any signs of aggression. Buster didn’t want to be
scratched, and the owner indicated that she doesn’t seem to enjoy this
type of interaction. Buster seems to prefer women but isn’t aggressive
toward men. Although Buster isn’t the cuddly type, she will be a
wonderful companion to someone who has time to spend with her. She
comes with a large cage, food, and wooden toys.

Missy - 9/7/2011
|
9/7/2011
Missy is a female Moluccan Cockatoo,
approximately
16-18
years
of
age.
She
lays
a
few
eggs
each
year.
She
has
been
in
three
different
homes
during
her
lifetime,
including
six years with her present owner. She
breaks her feathers but not down to bare skin. She is not on any
pellets and currently is eating only fruits, veggies, and peanuts. The
owners previously had her on Harrison pellets but she wasn’t eating
them; they were advised to give them daily again. Missy comes with an
undersized 18” x 24” x 60” cage, but would need a larger one. She is
out of the cage for most of the day. She is covered at night. Her
owners are seeking a new home due to the arrival of a baby and due to
not enough time to spend with Missy. She does not know the “step up”
command and was reluctant to come to me. She was loving with the family
and very interested in us, but shy. She is normally quiet except for
normal cockatoo calls. Missy will need attention and work from her new
owners to build trust. She will make a wonderful companion for the
right home. Supplying her with enrichment toys should help to deter her
feather breaking.

Winter and Chicken Little -
10/29/2011
|
10/29/2011
Chicken
Little (female) and Winter (male) are 25+ year old Goffin
Cockatoos who have been with
their current owner most of their lives. Both birds are
rescue/imported. They are currently in separate cages, but when let out
they quickly went to each other and showed affection toward each other.
They do not know the “step-up” command, but did not show a threatening
posture when I put my hand next to them as I rubbed their heads. Their
current owner is able to cuddle with, and pet, them. The female’s
chest/legs are bare and it is doubtful if re-feathering would occur.
The current owner would prefer they go to separate homes, but they
could also be kept together. They come with two cages and two travel
cages. The current owner was also in the bird toy making business and
has a very large assortment of toy pieces, dyes, etc, that would
accompany these birds to their new owners. The birds are on a pellet
diet, supplemented with seeds, fruits, and veggies. I think both birds
would be very affectionate to their new owners with a little patience
and time.

Birdy - 11/4/2011
|
11/4/2011
Birdy
is a 14 yr old,
thought to be male, Cockatiel. He is friendly and likes to be held
and to sit on the shoulder. He is very beautiful and has been with the
same owner his entire life. His owner has moved and is not being
allowed to keep Birdy. He will make a great companion in the right
home. He is on Lafeber’s Avi Cakes and enjoys some table food. He comes
with his cage and toys.

Cleo - 1/25/2012
|
1/25/2012
Cleo is a Congo
African Grey, age unknown. She is thought to be female
but has not been sexed. Cleo is hand-shy and has not been out of her
cage for 16 years. Her foster family has been trying to hold her, but
if she is afraid, she will try to fly. She seems to eat any type of
pellets but does not know what fresh fruits and vegetables are. She has
been overgrooming her back and has only one red tail feather. Cleo
needs an experienced, patient owner who has lots of time to work with
her.
